Project title: Obersteirerpass AT

Programme: Sustainable mobility in practice Call for proposals 2022

In cooperation with the Gesäuse, Auseerland and Murtal tourism associations

Rural exodus, new working environments and demographic change have been driving up urbanisation rates for decades. Fuelled by the normalisation of mobile working and the desire for a genuine, sustainable quality of life, rural areas – provided they can keep this promise in practice thanks to a functioning infrastructure and innovative services – have the opportunity to become not only a place of longing for tourists, but also a place of the future for its citizens.

Successful regional development requires structural prerequisites. Two of these are of particular importance:

– Digitalisation

– mobility

The intelligent combination of these two drivers creates solutions that not only meet specific needs, but also develop appeal for the entire region and far beyond. And with positive effects on the quality of the location, labour market, education and tourism. The aim of this project, in which regional developers, tourism and industry work side by side, is to work with an experienced map management specialist to develop a customised map system (“Obersteirer-Pass”) tailored to the region for both locals and employees.

Concrete output: Business model including implementation plan for an Upper Styrian Pass (working title)

In order to achieve this output, several work steps are required in cooperation with the tourism associations, regional stakeholders and service providers (regional process support and expertise in the implementation of the pass).

The following steps will be carried out within one year:

– Project and process management with public relations work

– Basic survey for the 3 regions – participatory processes are used here to involve the most important stakeholders: local population, tourism businesses of various sizes, tourism payers and thus economic operators (employers, industrial companies), all tourism communities in the region, interest groups, etc.

– Define internal processes for sustainable follow-up implementation from 2024

– Product development to design an adequate offer

– Develop marketing to make the future application attractive

– Build up sales accordingly to guarantee a minimum turnover

These processes and the output cover a wide range of needs in a peripheral region:

– Maintaining flexible, demand-orientated mobility services

– Strengthening the first/last mile

– Strengthening target group-orientated offers for tourists, families and employees

– Solution approach for combining and integrating new mobility services into public transport

– Conceptual approach and regional cooperation to promote the use of e-vehicles and sharing vehicles

– Supports the change in regional mobility behaviour

The project thus serves to harmonise various mobility services and their interfaces in order to be able to offer them in a user-friendly way in integrated, affordable and financially viable mobility services in the future. A holistic project, so to speak, to sustainably improve mobility in tourism regions in the long term. All relevant stakeholders are involved, various steps are being taken in parallel, but this project is essential as a milestone to guarantee all other mobility activities for citizens. (regional bus, rail transport, shared taxis, etc.)
